Why some streets make you slow down

Published Mar 12, 2026 · 6 min read

The same four hundred metres can take ten minutes or half an hour. Every fifty metres I counted the doors, windows and places to sit.

Busy edges

The more doors and windows a stretch has, the more often people stop. This is how I kept count:

stops = count(doors + windows, every="50m")

Each language has its own address. Translations live under /en/, /ja/ and so on, readers switch with a language menu, and every page tells search engines about its other languages with hreflang. Arabic is laid out right to left.

What gets translated

The whole site, not just the article.

Articles and pages are translated together with the site title and description, navigation, section names and interface text such as "Related articles" and "min read". Code, links and addresses stay as they are.

  • Article titles, summaries, tags and text
  • Standalone pages, with their SEO title and description
  • Section names and descriptions
  • Site title, description and navigation
  • Interface text

Left as written

  • Code blocks and inline code
  • Links and addresses
  • Names, numbers and brands

Interface text, ready in every language

Edit in Notion, every language follows.

Each translation remembers the version it came from. When a sync brings in changed text, that translation is marked Outdated and queued again, and the article list shows each language's status: Translated, Outdated, Queued or Failed.

Questions

Do I need to translate anything myself?

No. Turn on the languages you want and Newmade translates the existing content in the background, then keeps it up to date after each sync.

How are translations kept up to date?

Every translation stores a fingerprint of the original it was made from. When the original changes, the translation is marked Outdated and translated again; unchanged content isn't retranslated.

What about password-protected articles?

They are shown in their original language for now, so an earlier translation can't reveal protected parts. Translation resumes when protection is removed.

How many languages can I publish?

Multiple languages are part of Pro and Studio: up to 3 translation languages on Pro and 8 on Studio, chosen from twelve, in addition to the language you write in.
