Case study

A coffee rebrand, from one corner to a city

In spring, Northwind Coffee asked us to rethink a brand that had grown faster than its signage. The brief: keep the warmth of the first store, and make it readable from across the street.

We spent three weeks on site, sketching menus and testing colour on real walls. The final proposal came in at ¥186,000 for identity and signage, delivered in two phases over the summer.

What worked: one warm colour, a hand-drawn menu board and a logo that still reads at twenty metres. Questions go to Lin Wei, 138 0000 1234, who led the project on our side.

Lock a whole article behind your theme's password page, hide only the sentences and images that are sensitive, or protect a standalone page such as a client delivery page.

Articles and pages: what’s the difference?

ArticlesCome from the Notion database you connect: each row is one article. They are dated and appear on your homepage and section lists — blog posts, case studies, notes. You protect them under Articles.

PagesStand on their own at a fixed address, such as About, Pricing or a client handover. They don’t appear in article lists; you build them from sections under Pages, or use a Notion page. You protect them in the page settings.

On the server

Visitors only ever receive the public version.

Protected text is replaced on the server before the page is sent, and protected images become tiny blurred placeholders. The originals never reach a visitor's browser.

  • Changing the password or the protected range locks the article again for everyone.
  • Five wrong attempts pause guessing for 15 minutes.

Editing in Notion doesn't leak anything.

If the article changes in Notion so the protected ranges no longer match, the whole article locks until you confirm the ranges again.

  1. Partly protected

    Visitors read the public parts.

  2. Edited in Notion

The next sync brings in the changed text.

  3. Whole article locks

Ranges no longer match, so nothing is guessed.

  4. You confirm again

Review the ranges; the public parts return.

For writing you want to share, but not with everyone

  • Client case studiesShow the process and the outcome; keep the client's name, budget and figures for the people you send the password to.
  • Photography proofsPublish the story of a shoot and protect the unreleased frames until the client signs off.
  • Reports and researchKeep the method and public findings open, and the internal numbers for your team or partners.
  • Drafts and deliveriesShare a draft with early readers, or a delivery page with a client, without making it public.

Clear about what it doesn't do.

Protection controls who receives the content; it isn't end-to-end encryption, and editors in your workspace can read the full article.

  • AI can miss things; review its suggestions before you apply them.
  • Titles, tags and anything you leave unselected stay public.
  • Images hosted elsewhere are removed from the page but can't be blocked at their source, and copies saved before you added protection can't be recalled.

Questions

Which should I use: whole-article or partial protection?

Use a whole-article password when nothing should be read without it, such as a client delivery. Use partial protection when most of the article can be public and searchable, and only names, numbers or images need to stay private.

Is protected content encrypted?

No. Protection is access control on the server: visitors without the password never receive the protected parts, but the full article is stored in your workspace and its members can read it in the console.

Does AI read my article?

Only when you run AI identification for partial protection. The article and your rule are sent to the model the platform uses; the password never is. You can always select what to protect by hand.

What do search engines see?

The public version only: protected passages appear as placeholders and whole-article protected posts show their password page. The sitemap, RSS, site search and share previews never include protected text.

What happens on a multilingual site?

Protected articles are shown in their original language for now, so a translation made before protection can't expose hidden parts. Translation resumes when you remove protection.

Which plans include it?

Whole-article, partial and page passwords are included from the Personal plan. AI identification draws on the plan's monthly AI credits.
