Your layout.Their way of reading.

Readers get more than a nice layout: an outline that follows them, progress with time left, their own text size, tone and width, site search, galleries and a lightbox, code you can copy, diagrams, and a quick way to react.

Why some streets make you slow down

Lin Chuan · 6 min read

Busy edges

The same four hundred metres can take ten minutes or half an hour. The difference is rarely the distance; it is how many reasons the street gives you to stop.

I counted doors, windows and places to sit every fifty metres for three weekends. The busier the edge, the longer people stayed.

Three corners

Three junctions on Wutong Road held people longest in this survey.

How it was recorded

Each stop is one record in the same format, so they can be compared on a map later.

One stop, step by step

Break one stop down and it looks roughly like this:

A small Aa panel lets each reader switch between light and dark or follow their system, and pick a text size and a column width. The choice stays on their device.

Built in

Thirteen capabilities, ready for any theme.

Navigation, search and discovery, reader preferences, sharing, images and embeds, reactions and feedback, the outline, reading progress, code and diagrams are built into the platform. A theme decides which ones it uses and how they look; ask the theme assistant to add one, and you preview it before it goes live.

On phones

Just as considered on a phone.

The outline folds into a drawer, navigation becomes a menu, tables and embeds fit the screen, and images open full-screen with swipe-friendly controls.

Try it: close the drawer, then open the outline again.

Responses

A quick way to respond.

Readers can react with a couple of emoji, answer "Was this article helpful?" with a reason and a note, and save articles to read later. No account and no names: you see the totals and notes in the console.

Questions

Do I have to turn these on one by one?

The starter themes already use the ones that suit them. To add or change one, describe it to the theme assistant, for example "add an outline on the right and a progress bar", and preview the result before you apply it.

Does any of this slow the site down?

Pages are rendered on the server, images load lazily at the right size, and each capability only loads on pages that use it.

Where are bookmarks stored?

In the reader's own browser. Newmade doesn't track who saved what; reactions and feedback are counted anonymously.

Can readers search the whole site?

Yes. Site search looks through titles, summaries and tags, and readers can open it with the / key.

Write it in Notion.
Readers take it from there.

Every plan. Ask the theme assistant to switch a capability on or change how it looks.
